Willie is 16, a secondary school student in Gateshead, UK, with an alcoholic for a dad and a mum who had been absent for most of her life. But now her mum contacts Willie out of the blue and wants to meet her. However, the ferry that was supposed to take her to visit her mum in Norway sinks in the North Sea. 

Willie is able to save herself on a life raft, and mysterious things start to happen ... She finds herself in a different world, and is rescued by the crew of the sailing ship The Eagle Ray. They drag her along on their crazy adventures, and in the process maybe Willie can learn to deal with her problems at home and dare to choose her own way in life ... 

Drawn over the course of sixteen years, the artwork matures along with the protagonist.
